Hunt #31 - October 22nd, 2004

NPR Morning Edition Hunt
Location:
Leeds Point, NJ

Crew:
Laura K. Leuter, Belinda Connolly, Kevin Brown, Liz McLaughlin, Tim Garrity

We met with a radio crew from NPR Morning Edition WHYY Philadelphia to give them an interview and hunt broadcast for one of their halloween shows. We all gathered at JD's Pub and headed off into the woods of Leeds Point to give them a small tour of the area.

The first place we took them to was the docks where we had found the ripped up birds. It was interesting, as always, but nothing all that special to report about that area. Sorry, no more ripped up birds...

Then we continued on the trails throughout the Leeds Point area, while discussing the Jersey Devil and our organization. While Liz was speaking to the radio crew, I suddenly stopped the team and called for silence. I saw something moving in the woods tonight, about 15-20 feet away from our location on the trail. Whatever it was, it was moving parallel to us, headed in the same direction. All I caught a glimpse of was the rear quarters of the creature, and it looked to be about knee-high. It was grayish in color, though that could be because of the lack of light in the area. Everything tends to look gray out there! The thing was moving, and I caught a glimpse of the rear leg kicking back while it was walking.

Now, I will be the first to admit that what I saw was probably a deer or a dog. I don't know. The strange thing is that there was no noise from its movement. I didn't hear anything, I just happened to be looking in the right place at the right time to see it. The whole area was silent. What I could see wasn't very big. I just don't understand why we didn't hear any noise. If it had been a dog or a deer, we would have at least heard it moving through the brush. But we didn't. In fact, it was fairly silent. If it was a deer, it was a fairly small deer, which struck me as odd since most of the baby deer for this year have grown. I don't know, I could be wrong. Do I think I saw the Jersey Devil? No, not really. Since I can't explain it, and I didn't see anything to make me think it was the Jersey Devil (no wings, no deer like head, and I think it was walking on four legs), I'd have to say I just saw some regular animal out there in the woods. But it was odd, we've never seen animals walking that close to us and when we do know that an animal is present, we always hear it moving. To say the least, it caught me off guard. Anyway, they had the recorder going at that time, so you may hear it on the radio... just wanted to clarify now so that if they do air it, my explanation is already here.

So once we were fairly certain that it was gone, and we didn't see or hear any noise from that area, we continued on down the trail. After traveling a short distance, Liz and Bel stopped the group again - they had heard noises on the other side of the trail. We never did find the source of the noise. On our way back to the cars, Megan (from the radio crew) told me that she had gotten some strange feedback on the recorder that she had never heard before... I wasn't all that surprised to hear that, either.

It was pretty creepy out there in Leeds Point this time. We've gone there so many times, and recently it has seemed as though the area has lost its energy and excitement for the group. However, tonight definitely had an eerie feeling about it.

We had to cut it short due to the fact that the radio crew works the morning edition, and had to be up at 4am, so we wrapped up after some other noises. And of course, we made it a well rounded evening by heading back to JD's Pub for a cup of their killer French Onion soup. It's very good.

The radio segment that we recorded on this hunt is scheduled to be aired for Thursday, October 28th, 2004, at about 7am. They broadcast over the internet as well, so if luck is with us, I can link us directly to the clip so you can listen.
